This week’s meal plan and why supermarkets are sabotaging your weight-loss goals and wallet

this week's meal plan

Hello Everybody

As many of my readers already know, I’m a big fan of online grocery shopping.  This is for a number of reasons:-

  1. I hate shopping,
  2. It saves me loads of time – I don’t waste time driving to the store, I don’t waste time pushing a trolley round the store, I don’t waste time loading and unloading bulging bags of food.
  3. I don’t get tempted to buy food I don’t really need.
  4. As I haven’t bought food I don’t need, I don’t waste as much food or money.
  5. I’m not tempted to buy unhealthy goods that sabotage my healthy eating goals.

Why supermarkets are sabotaging your weight-loss goals and wallet

Whenever you go to a supermarket you have to remember that they are a multi billion pound industry, that’s constantly searching for ways to make you buy more.

Have you noticed how much bigger shopping trollies are now? Way back when I was a teenager, you could only just fit your friend in a trolley with their legs hanging out the end.  Nowadays you can fit two friends, with their legs tucked in!

Enticing, brightly coloured items are always placed at the front of the store for you to see as soon as you walk in.  At Christmas time, these were the huge boxes of Quality Street and Roses chocolates.

Supermarkets know that the most regularly bought items are milk and bread.  That’s why these items are always right at the back of the store, making you pass all the enticing items on your way.

Items like sweets, chocolates and sugary cereals are placed right at kid’s eye level.  No wonder our kids today have tantrums every time they go to the supermarket.

Items on “sale” or “down in price” are often inflated to begin with or subsidised by the brand to tempt you to buy them.  Once you’re hooked on their product, the prices increase.

Have you also noticed that the “buy one, get one free” items are usually unhealthy, sugary foods?  Again, the food producers know they can effectively get you ‘hooked’ on their product by doing this and you will keep craving more.

So, to protect your healthy eating, weight-loss goals and wallet, my recommendation is to buy your food online, topping up your fresh goods from a local farmers market if possible.

If that really doesn’t work for you then make sure you have a list when you go shopping and stick to it.  Go in fully aware that the supermarket is out to make you buy more and make sure you don’t go shopping on an empty stomach!

This week’s meal plan:-

  • Shepherds pie
  • Chinese roasted pork with stir fried vegetables and rice
  • Chicken tacos and salad
  • Chicken casserole, Jacket potatoes (sweet or normal) and sweetcorn
  • Lamb tagine and rice/couscous
  • Chorizo and mushroom pasta
  • Curry prawns and Singapore noodles

I hope you all have a super week.
